Generously supported by TD Canada Trust, Euromusic Centre again successfully hosted the 17th Markham Music Festival from March 23, 2012 to April 8, 2012.  Dedicated to the advancement of music studies, this year the festival attracted over 1000 entries not only from Markham, but also all over greater Toronto, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, as west as Mississauga, and as east as Whitby, Ontario.  The forum provided young pianists an opportunity to showcase their artistry as well as given professional assessments to guide improvement.  The Festival also encourages and rewards excellent achievements, and brings music and people together in a unique cultural occasion community in Markham.

The Three adjudicators are all highly respected musicians in the music circle. We are fortunate to have Ms. Arianne Ewing-Chow, Mr. James Lawless, and Dr. Joseph Ferretti, all members of the College of Examiners of the Royal Conservatory of Music as our adjudicators. They offered their expert evaluations and shared with us their musical knowledge and experiences. The performers were phenomenal and the results extremely remarkable. Many Young promising talents were discovered and acknowledged.

This year, we have about 1000 entries who were divided into 92 different classes.  As a result, there are about 140 winners emerged. Our 2012 Grand Champion is 16 year old Yi Wei Yao, who successfully defends his title from 2011. He will be awarded a return air ticket to Asia by Toureast. The Steinway Trophy goes to a bright new star in Ricky Song who has also captured the Bach Trophy. Tiffany Tse and Wilson Wu achieve equally remarkable results, they share the Tonoco Trophy. 12 year old Timothy Lam is the recipient of the Kemble Trophy, while 13 year old Anson Hui is awarded with a heavier than him Concerto Trophy. 8 year old Jaclyn Wang for the second year wins the highest mark among all the sonatinas and his awarded with the Sonatina Trophy. Catherine Ma is a double winner of the Sonata Trophy as well as the 200 years anniversary prize of Debussy Trophy. There are many gold and silver medallions, scholarships, trophies, and gifts galore to be awarded to the various deserving winners.

Our sponsors include – TD Canada Trust, Toureast Holidays, Sing Tao Daily, World Journal, Fairchild Radio, Locher Evers International, DeHoog Piano Movers, Global Maxfin Capital Inc., World Insurance & Financial Services Ltd., Wishing Well Lions Club, etc and our Festival’s official choice of piano is exclusively Steinway & Sons.

The Gala Concert and Awards ceremony will take place on April 15, 2012 at 1:30pm at the Markham Theatre.  The Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sport, Mr. Michael Chan and Mayor Frank Scarpitti will graciously attend this event.
Mr. Paul Rizzi, Manager of TD Canada Trust, and many other branch managers will also grace the theatre in this special afternoon, which promises to be an exciting musical celebration in Markham.

We are extremely proud to have the eminent Professor Lee Kum Sing of the faculty of music of the University of British Columbia as our Honorary Chaiman who addressed all participants with encouragement and expounded on the true spirit of music festival through an ideal ambience of harmony, creatively as well as the presentation of musical appreciation and interpretation. It was in exactly the kind of friendly environment and atmosphere that the Markham Music Festival debuted. Enthusiastic audience packed the concert hall everyday and night, appreciating and applauding every performer.

We like to extend our gratitude to all the supportive parents who through rain, snow and sleet brought their young musicians to participate in this meaningful event. Furthermore, to all the piano teachers who have assiduously prepared their students to a high standard of performance. Many thanks to all our dedicated volunteers who have contributed their precious gift of time and very friendly and able assistance. The Markham Music Festival is unthinkable without all these support.
